Recreation
Stroll down Aberdeen Ave. to Fresh Pond Reservation. Here you'll find a two-mile walking path around the reservoir, a municipal golf course, and a playground. Ever popular with dog owners - Cambridge residents' dogs are allowed off leash - Fresh Pond is also a favorite with bird watchers.Run or walk alongside the Charles River - just half a mile from 581 Mount Auburn. In the spring and summer Memorial Drive is closed to traffic on Sundays - allowing for even more space for bicyclists, walkers, runners, and roller bladers.
Across the street from 581 Mount Auburn is the main entrance to Mount Auburn Cemetery. This historic cemetery opened in the 1830s as the first garden cemetery in the United States and within a few years attracted more visitors annually than Niagara Falls. The cemetery is a National Historic Landmark.
Today the cemetery is a magical place - home to over 5,000 trees and filled with some 30,000 monuments and sculptures. Those buried here include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Mary Baker Eddy, Buckminster Fuller, Fannie Farmer, and Isabella Stewart Gardner.
Paths wind through the 175 beautifully landscaped acres. There are several ponds and a tower atop one of the hills. Many of the plants and trees have identification labels and some are state or regional champion specimens. A mecca for birds - and bird watchers - it's not unlikely that you'll spot a heron or an owl while wandering the grounds.
